Teacher preparation is changing

Over the last year major reports on educator preparation have been published by government entities, think tanks, teacher organizations, and higher education organizations. In Oregon, our Secretary of State issued a report last August that the legislature will follow up on in the next session.

PK12 educators hear everyday about changing requirements for educator assessment and accountability. In this blog post, I will briefly summarize some of the changes taking place in educator preparation and how Oregon is responding.

Can the teaching profession be trusted?

I asked this question in a 2008 article I wrote for Phi Delta Kappan. Part of my response to the question was that “if the teaching profession is ever to be trusted to manage its professional affairs, we must unite around principles and standards that will serve students and the community well.”

One of the great challenges in our field is how to address the many myths that exist about schools and the teaching profession. I still hear it frequently stated that a physician from the 19th century would be totally lost in an operating room today, but a teacher from the same century would be quite at home in today’s classrooms.
