Geraldine Hammond, retired Salem educator and leader

Geraldine Hammond grew up in New Orleans. She obtained her teacher certification in Louisiana, and in 1955 she moved to Oregon where she began teaching a few years later. Geraldine served as a teacher, and in 1976 she became Salem’s first African-American principal. She also coordinated the district’s multicultural programs. The Salem-Keizer school district honored Geraldine in 2001 when the new Hammond Elementary School opened its doors. Geraldine is now retired and living in Salem.

Teach to Lead exceeds expectations

Funder collaborative helps teachers and school leaders revamp classroom instruction, increase student success

"If you are trying to change systems, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul...Policy advocacy is an essential tool in systems change... Equity has to be an explicit, upfront goal if you want to reduce disparities." These three lessons and more are outlined in the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy's article about Chalkboard's initiatives.
