Changing systems from the inside out

Teaching always felt like a natural fit. My experiences in school growing up were always positive. There were many teachers along the way, starting in elementary school and continuing on through high school and college and graduate school, who showed interest in me, who mentored me. What’s more, they made me feel they cared.

“You’re too young to understand:” Oregon students reframing our view of students

New clothes, freshly sharpened pencils, color-coded binders, and the smell of too much cologne all signify the start of a new school year. In parallel, Oregon Student Voice (OSV) is dressed with a new energy and an imperishable motivation to ensure all students have equal opportunities and access to achieve their full potential in and out of schools. OSV is a student-led organization that recognizes the power of a student’s voice.

My View: School board must work as a team

The first task of the new Portland board is to become a functioning team. This board will need our support as it tackles many critical challenges, including hiring a new superintendent.

The new Portland Public Schools School Board is beginning its work this month. Three new members have been sworn in and the total of seven members now have 12 years of accumulated board experience.

A school principal has a multitude of responsibilities to juggle, but Darryl Coppedge understands that at its core, the job is about empowering teachers to do excellent work in the classroom.

Breaking down barriers: How Tillamook School District is addressing educational equity

Last year Chalkboard Project launched a pilot project exploring equity issues in the Tillamook and David Douglas school districts.  With the help of Chalkboard facilitators, educators, students, parents, and community members met to explore the root causes and impact of inequity in the education system and to devise strategies for addressing those issues.
