A diverse teacher workforce is important for student outcomes

Why is it important for students of color to have teachers who look like them? And what is being done to promote workforce diversity?

A recent online article by the Urban Institute explored the issue of educator diversity. The article points out that the pipeline is tight because not enough students of color are going to or graduating from college. And not enough of those who do are majoring in education.

Rewarding teachers for their professional growth

Bend-La Pine Schools are in the middle of a game-changing pilot program that overhauls the way teachers are paid—compensating them based on their professional growth instead of number of years on the job and college credits.

Changing the status quo is never simple, but Bend-La Pine’s effort shows a willingness to try something new. “Building the plane while we’re flying it,” is the recurring metaphor both proponents and skeptics use to describe the work underway.

Why Does Class Size Matter?

I’m worried that the recession will never end for children in our Oregon public schools. The crisis will be declared over and the general public will have adjusted to larger class sizes and fewer programs. We’ll continue with classes near the largest in the country and wonder why our children still aren’t outperforming kids in countries that invest more in education.

Staying Power: Securing the Gains in Education Reform

I hear often that there is conclusive evidence that teachers are the top “in-house” factor in student achievement, yet since I started following education policy in Oregon in the late 1970s, education reform has been focused on standards, content, assessment—pretty much everything BUT the quality of teaching in our public schools. So it is exciting to see in Oregon today a new focus on supporting and strengthening teaching in Oregon.

Teacher Contract Database launched

Today we launched the Teacher Contract Database, an online tool designed to help individuals understand and compare collective bargaining agreements for Oregon’s public school districts. Collective bargaining agreements directly impact teacher working conditions and the learning environment in schools. These contracts shape school district policies and budgeting.

Charting a new and brighter path for Oregon

Recently I made the announcement that I will be stepping back from my day-to-day work with Chalkboard. This change is driven largely by healthy family considerations, a time that I hope will be devoted more to being a husband, father, and grandfather. What you have heard is true…being a grandparent really does change one’s priorities in life! Although I will no longer be in an active daily role as an educational leader, I will continue to serve our staff and Board in an advisory capacity.
